The Plum Village monks and nuns have, for many years, lived in Plum Village—a monastery for Buddhist monks and nuns and a retreat center for lay people—in the southwest of France. Plum Village was founded in 1982 by Thich Nhat Hanh, a Buddhist monk, teacher, and author whose peace-based activism in his native Vietnam eventually led to his exile. His mindfulness teachings have inspired hundreds of thousands of people around the world, making him one of the most beloved Buddhist teachers in the West.
The senior monks, nuns, and disciples of Thich Nhat Hanh received the Lamp Transmission—the initiation as a dharma teacher in this lineage—directly from him.

A Mindfulness Retreat in the Tradition of Thich Nhat Hanh

Thich Nhat Hanh is a Buddhist monk, teacher, and author whose peace-based activism in his native Vietnam eventually led to his exile. His mindfulness teachings have inspired hundreds of thousands of people around the world, and made him a well-loved spiritual teacher in the West. His message is simple: Bringing peace into our own lives brings peace into the world.

The theme of this retreat-Calm Heart, Clear Mind-is a response to the present situation of the world. Assailed by so many disturbing events, many of us need to find a true, peaceful response to what we feel and see, and not to fall into despair or anger.

Approaching everything we do with lovingkindness, we participate in sitting and walking meditation, mindful eating, dharma talks, group discussions, and tea meditation-with many moments of refreshing silence. This is a time to rest and renew, and to receive the gifts of sharing spiritual practice within a community. Nourished in this way, we develop our capacity for compassion and help to bring healing to those who suffer.

The monks and nuns leading this retreat have lived in Plum Village with Thich Nhat Hanh for many years, and among them are those who have received from him the Lamp Transmission authorization to teach Buddhist meditation in his lineage.
